Health Help - News You Can Use

Q
"As the temperature continues to rise, what precautions do I need to take to endure the summer heat?"

A
A healthy body temperature is maintained by sweating. Older adults do not sweat easily and usually have other health conditions that affect their ability to lose heat. This is why older adults are high at risk for heat-related illnesses such as:

  • Heat rash or muscle cramps

  • Swelling in the legs and hands

  • Hyperventilation, heat stress, and fainting

  • Heat exhaustion or heatstroke (sunstroke)

To endure a hot, St. Louis summer, spend most of your time in cool, air-conditioned areas, and reduce outdoor physical activity, particularly in the hottest afternoon hours. Eat small, well-balanced meals throughout the day to maintain energy. To avoid dehydration, drink plenty of water, avoiding beverages with caffeine or alcohol. Loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing will keep you cooler, including a wide-brimmed hat to cover your face and neck. It's also a good idea to use a sunscreen to prevent sunburn, which can hinder the skin's ability to cool itself.

If you must be in a hot environment for an extended period of time, take steps to keep your body comfortable by opening windows and using fans to promote air circulation. Retreat to cool, shaded areas frequently for breaks. Remember to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. If you suspect you are experiencing dehydration or other heat-related illnesses, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

St. Andrew's At-Home Services helps to serve the needs of older adults and their families in the comfort of their home, including housekeeping, transportation, meal preparation, personal care, nursing services and companionship.
