Q
"What warning signs should I be aware of to know if I am at risk of a cataract?"

Most people do not realize that vision loss is among the top seven chronic health conditions that affect quality of life and medical service use among older adults in the United States. This sense may be diminished or lost because of heredity, aging, injury, or disease.

Everyone's eyesight changes later in life, and cataract development is typically a gradual process. A few warning signs of cataracts can include:

  • Hazy vision that might be worse in bright light

  • Impaired vision at night; difficulty in discerning movements, details or objects

  • Seeing halos around lights

  • Double or triple vision in one eye only

  • The need for brighter light for reading

  • Colors appearing faded or yellowed

It is important to attend regular eye exams and to discuss any concerns you have with your physician. If cataract surgery is needed, you will need to establish a support system such as family, friends, or St. Andrew's At Home Services, to help you during your recovery process.

St. Andrew's At-Home Services helps to serve the needs of older adults and their families in the comfort of their home, including housekeeping, transportation, meal preparation, personal care, nursing services and companionship.
