3 Important Things
Seniors and Caregivers Need to Know The Treasury Department plans to roll out prepaid debit cards for Social Security payments across 14 Midwestern states next month. The cards, known as Direct Express, are designed to increase the security of Social Security payments. The cards are optional and require the recipient to sign up to receive the debit card. The debit cards are less susceptible to fraud because users would need a personal ID number to use the cards at stores or to get cash at the ATM’s. The debit card is also an alternative for people that don’t have a bank account due to concerns about bank fees or that they don’t have enough money to open a banking account. ANOTHER PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT CARD Another free prescription-drug discount card is available for residents of Missouri. The new card allows people to save an average of 30% on brand-name and generic medications. There are no age, income, or insurance restrictions. The drug card program was started to help the uninsured and under-insured gain access to expensive medications. The drug card can be used by those with medical coverage but patients cannot use both discounts for a single prescription. The local Schnucks and Kmart pharmacies are assisting with the application process. Additional information is available on-line at www.missouridrugcard.com. If you are a resident of Illinois please feel free to contact your ElderCare Specialist to learn about programs offered in IL. ECONOMIC STIMULUS PAYMENT REMINDER There is still time to file for the 2008 Economic Stimulus Payment. According to IRS reports, there are many seniors who have not filed the Federal 1040 form in order to receive the stimulus payment. The minimum payment for a single person is $300 and a married couple may be eligible for a $600 payment. In order to receive the payment, the IRS must receive the 1040 forms by October 15, 2008.
