Caring Workplace Monthly Article: May 2006
Celebrate National Older
Adult Month
Brought to you by the Caring Workplace
For the past several decades May has been
designated as Older Adult Month. This is the time of the year that the
nation turns to its seniors and celebrates the many ways lives and
communities have been enriched by the contributions and achievements of
older adults. During this month we all take extra time and attention to
honor our senior citizens and to learn from their experiences.
Across the county all local, state and federal
agencies participate in a week long events to honor our older adults.
This year’s theme is “Choices for Independence”, which reflects the
importance of our older adults making lifestyle changes, health choices,
and retirement choices that enhance their quality of life as they grow
older. We have seen over the past several years our seniors become more
active, continuing serving in our communities as volunteers and reaching
out to others like them. Let us as family members continue to support
our loved ones as they enjoy their golden years of retirement. Here are
some tips on how to honor our loved ones.
-
Thank the Older Adult for something they have said
to you or done for you in the past and how much it meant to you.
-
Tell the Older Adult about how they have inspired
you, either in the past or something they are doing now.
-
Share your love for that person and how much they
mean to you.
-
Bring the Older Adult a small gift of something you
know they will enjoy for example a small plant or flowers, a photo, a
food item that they love to eat (and are able to eat).
-
Give the person a personal inspirational card or
quote that has significance or gives them hope.
-
Listen to the Older Adult, really listen and
empathize with them. You don’t’ always have to fix them and make it all
better.
-
Laugh with the Older Adult. Have fun and be
playful, believe it or not the Older Adult has a playful inner child.
Above all, respect and honor the Older Adult for
being the person they are. Look into their heart and soul and see that
person in a whole new way or in the way you used to see them. Be
thankful that we have a nation that has been blessed by our seniors.
These individuals have sacrificed, been our leaders, been an example to
the upcoming generations and are widely known and used for their
wisdom. So, remember on that day that you are with your loved one to
tell them thanks for all they have done for you. Remember to do this not
only in May but throughout the whole year!
